Obvio

Went out to dinner at Obvio in New York City with Angel and Nicole! I came into this restaurant with an extremely empty stomach and high expectations after reading their reviews. I can confidently say that my expectations were MET. I’d run a marathon to try that calamari tempura for the first time again. I’ve had calamari tempura at quite a few restaurants and every time I order it I feel somewhat let down because it fails to wow me. Obvio did the COMPLETE OPPOSITE (Newsflash: I was WOWED). The outside coat of the tempura had the most spectacular crunch to it, and it was so savory that the flavor just exploded in my mouth the second I took a bite out of it. So good. Next, I got the Obvio burger and fries. I kind of regret not getting a unique/signature Obvio dish. I ordered it because I was starving and a burger just sounded so filling. To put things simply, the burger was beautiful. It was just an excellently made, classic, and delicious burger. The fries were crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside — perfection. I love thin fries — there’s just something about them that tastes so much better than regular-size fries. Anyway, my entrée was just an all-around great hamburger and fries.

Mykos

Dinner at Mykos and it was nothing short of outstanding per usual. Started off with their insane pita bread, accompanied by feta and tzatziki dips. I never tried their feta dip before this dinner because I always stuck with the tzatziki. God I am so happy that I decided to give it a go. I feel like I can’t even begin to put into words how incredible this was. The dip had a sweet but tangy flavor and it was just the richest spread oh my gosh. AMAZING. I didn’t get a chance to take a photo of the beef tartare. I was too busy stuffing my face with it. My entrée was a medium rare steak with a side of gigante beans. I’ve had the steak from Mykos before, no surprises here because it was phenomenal as always. Ended off with a chocolate ice cream because it’s usually impossible for me to say no to a sweet treat.

Blue Sushi

This review's a bit overdue, but I ate here with some friends a little over a week ago. This sushi is from Blue Sushi in Lavallette, NJ. We ordered a Golden Spider Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, and California Roll. I don't 100% remember the names of the other three rolls, but I think that they were the Amazing Roll, the Dragon Roll, and the Triple Three Roll? I could definitely be wrong but… Anyway, I didn't really like sushi all that much up until two years ago. A bunch of people forced me to try it out even though I was so set on the idea that I'd never be a sushi lover. Ever since I tried a spider roll for the first time, my world was CHANGED. I've no joke fallen in love with sushi, and the sushi from Blue Sushi was DIVINE. It's restaurants like these that remind me of why I've grown to love sushi so much. The only thing that's running through my mind as I write this is how great that Golden Spider Roll was (third roll on the left in the first picture). This was one of their Blue Special Rolls, made with soft-shell crab, shrimp, eel, cucumber, and avocado, wrapped in soy paper with a drizzle of eel sauce and tobiko on top. Basically all of my favorite foods put into one roll. Absolutely insane, seriously. I think that these photos speak for themselves. The presentation of these rolls was nothing short of beautiful. I'm also a really big fan of the wooden platter that they used. A gorgeous tray for a gorgeous meal. The only thing that I'm upset about is the fact that I live so far away from this place. If I didn't, I'd revisit 100 times over.

I love foods of all kinds, but a meal doesn't need to be flashy or extravagant to be great and memorable, which is exactly why I love that saying so much. Sometimes, the simplest foods are the ones that leave the biggest impression. At the same time, some of my favorite moments with food come from trying something I never expected to love.

No matter where you are or what you try, step outside of your comfort zone. Who knows? Maybe you'll discover a love for something you never thought you'd enjoy.
